This short, sweet sentence sums up hours of labor and postpartum turmoil, yet that sentence is really all that matters. Our little Carson Benjamin Stewart is here, in our arms, safe and healthy.
But.... that's not really why you are reading this blog. You know that happened already! Now for the details!
On September 24th, at about 10:00 pm I was sick. Really, really sick. Vomitting and all. Of course I started having contractions and of course it wouldn't stop until I went into the hospital. I was loaded with fluids, medications and sent on my way. Unfortunately my contractions never completed stopped. All thru the next few days I was having contractions. I bumped up my prenatal weekly apt with my doctor to Thursday 27th just so I could be checked and see what is really happening.
We walk into our mid afternoon apt, wait about 1 hour, finally see the doctor and she informs me that my contractions have not been for nothing, I am 4 cm dilated!! My mouth dropped open. With Madison, when I reached 4 cm I was asking (maybe even begging) for an epidural! Whooo hooo for second baby!!
I left feeling excited and almost just giddy. Our man is going to be coming....SOON!! We stopped at Target to get a few last minute things and went home. Luckily Ben was with me because after being checked my contractions were getting stronger and closer together. I wanted to wait as long as possible but we also needed to arrange with our wonderful babysitters when Madison was going to stay with them.
By 4 p.m. I was in full labor. Contractions that took my breath away and made me stop in my tracks. We took Madison to Pia and Jannic's for the evening and headed to the hospital.
On arrival I was 4 cm and I almost fainted! I couldn't believe I had no progression. The nurse said if I did not have any progression in 1 hour that I would be sent home.
Oh No She Did Not Just Say That!!!!
Momma started walking / half running through the halls of Memorial Hospital. Even doing stairs for about 30 minutes. Ben continually informed me, "Please save some energy honey, you still need to push a baby out tooo!" I was DETERMINED! I had reached that point.
Luckily when we got back I was 5 cm dilated and ready to be admitted. The rest of the evening was quick!
7:00 pm - Admission to the hospital completed
8:15 pm - Dr. Hovenga broke my water
8:30 pm - Epidural inserted. At this point I actually had a drop in my blood pressure (which is not uncommon) and was given medication (Neo for all my nursing buddies reading this) to increase it. Right before this drop I was so light headed, started getting nauseated and really think I passed out for just a few seconds even. The medication helped and my epidural was FULLY working (numbness from about the waist down!)
9:51 pm - Two pushes later - Carson Benjamin Stewart was born!!!!
My beautiful, healthy boy weighed in at 7 lbs 11 oz and was 20 in long!!
Now after leaving the birthing room is where the real "fun" started ;)
That will be coming soon!!
