carson's arrival part II

We arrived in the post partum room at about midnight.  I was starving!!  Pushing a baby out will take it out of a girl.  I had a late night snack and then we went to bed for a few hours.

Carson was such a good boy, letting us sleep for about 4 hours straight and even allowing for a few naps but unfortunately I had began bleeding that morning.

When we left labor and delivery I had initial blood loss of 200 mL and then after about 15 minutes another 300 mL of unexpected blood loss but the bleeding stopped.  We thought we had nothing to worry about.

I woke up sitting in a large puddle of blood.  I was nervous but not too bad.  I figured maybe it was a fluke, maybe I just had a little left to get out.

Then it happened again and again and again.

I spoke with the nurse and about half way through we started weighing the blood loss.  I had large fist size clots (normal is no larger than a quarter) and the bleeding was very heavy.

Ben was worried.  I was worried (I have taken care of patients that hemorrhage post delivery).

Finally after 2 different medications were administered (Cytotec and Methergine) on a schedule, the bleeding began to slow down.  By that evening I had stopped the profuse bleeding but was very weak.

Dr. Hovenga stopped in and checked me (as Ben would say, "literally, she had her entire hand inside you").  I am sure she was ringing that uterus out for anymore clots but I think it was worse then the childbirth!  WOW!!!

My blood loss total was officially documented as 1200 mL but the nurse felt with all the bleeding that was not measured, the total was probably close to 2 Liters.  I felt it!  I was exhausted and still even feel like I am mildly recovering from it.

The whole situation was scary.  I am glad our little boy was healthy and is such a great baby.  He loves snuggling with Mommy, getting kisses from Daddy and receiving lots of hugs from his sister.

Madison was instantly taken by him.  She fell in love like the rest of us did, Hugging and Kissing brother as much as possible.  I feel so blessed with a beautiful sweet family and am thankful for all those small moments in our lives.
